Prior to starting Real Tax Pros, I owned a tax practice in the Los Angeles area for about 25 years. Growing that business from a one-man operation to a fully staffed tax and accounting business was exciting and professionally satisfying. But after tax season 2016 I realized I was exhausted and in need of a much longer recovery period. So, long story short, I sold the business and relocated to the Atlanta, GA area to live for a while as a retired person.
For several years my wife and I spent time at the beautiful local parks (we are still amazed at how clean and green they are), attended outdoor events, explored hobbies and did some traveling. While I enjoyed retirement living and I realized how fortunate we were to have the opportunity, I still found myself wondering “what’s next?”
Opening another brick and mortar location was no longer a desire, but I did ponder the idea of a fully remote tax practice. I had plenty of time to update my technology skills and get comfortable with the many tools now available to make working with clients remotely as natural and effective as the thousands of face to face meetings I’ve had with clients over the years.
Then Covid hit and working with clients remotely went from being a convenient option to a necessity. People that I had met while out and about were now contacting me - they were now totally comfortable with the idea of doing everything remotely and so was I.
I discovered clients who wanted to work with a tax pro online but they also needed to feel comfortable that they were working with a real person and that their taxes were being prepared by a professional. I created Real Tax Pros, a fully online tax practice to meet that need.
I worked with a few different local tax firms and local accountants and bookkeepers to build a quality network of professionals that I can rely on when needed.
I work mainly by referral. I take on a limited number of clients. This iteration of a tax business is different from the one I started way back when. My “commute to the office” takes less than a minute and I am able to commit more quality time to each individual. It’s a win win for me and my clients.
